Genetic Counseling Program

Genetic counseling rotations are a fundamental component of genetic counseling graduate training, providing students with comprehensive exposure to clinical practice, laboratory settings, and industry environments. Laboratory genetic counseling rotations offer critical insight into diagnostic processes, test development, and the integration of genetic counseling within broader healthcare and commercial frameworks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are externships paid?
Our externship program is a partnership between a college/university and our laboratories to provide students unpaid clinical hours necessary to complete their degree or certification. For example, a phlebotomy or medical laboratory science student needs a certain number of hands-on hours to complete their program or certification.
How long do externships run?
Externships are tailored to the student's academic needs and typically run from two weeks to four months.
How are externships arranged?
For a phlebotomy externship, please have your program director contact us with your specific educational needs, phlebotomy experience, logistical information, and proof of program accreditation. These are requirements to begin the process.

For all externships and clinical rotations, a signed affiliation agreement needs to be in place before an externship can begin. Please note, the process to set up this agreement can take several weeks to several months to complete. Ask your program director to contact us to find out what is required for this process.
What can I expect in a Labcorp externship or clinical rotation?
Each externship or clinical rotation at Labcorp is designed around the specific needs of the students and their degree or certificate programs. Depending on the program, the externship or clinical rotation could include lectures with our experts, laboratory tours with leaders and hands-on experiences in our laboratories or patient service centers.
Where can I find a Labcorp externship or clinical rotation near me?
The availability of externships is site-dependent and can vary based on operational capacity. Please ask your program director to email our externship support team and request more information.
Does Labcorp offer any other training programs or opportunities?
Labcorp trains medical laboratory scientists through the Labcorp School of Medical Laboratory Science and also offers a Histology Education Program. We also have a robust internship program at Labcorp.
